A little bit of context...

New Orleans is known for many things -food, music, Mardi Gras, and Vampires ( and chances are if you're viewing this page you want to learn more about the Vampire part).  This explanation is a little convoluted and requires a bit of backstory to put it all into context. It ultimately may not even be something that interests you, but read on through to find out!

First of all, this is A PARODY group.  We are not a real Vampiric Council, and have nothing to do with the actual vampires that live in our great city. Most, if not all, of the social media accounts we run will be 100% in character, but it is important to note that this is all in good fun and no actual harm is intended.  The Vampiric Council name is a reference to the mockumentary film and television show, both named What We Do in the Shadows.  If you're familiar with that show and particular flavor of comedy, then you've already got a head start as to what's going on here.

A bit more context - New Orleans is home to very many krewes and parades over Mardi Gras season (yes, it is a SEASON and not just a DAY).  The parade krewe we're primarily concerned with here is THE INTERGALACTIC KREWE OF CHEWBACCHUS. You can take an in depth dive to learn more specifics about Chewbacchus here : https://chewbacchus.org/ . In a nutshell, Chewbacchus is a wonderfully nerdy parade that derives its name from a mash up of Chewbacca from Star Wars and Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and revelry.  It's generally a pretty good time, and is made up of multiple nerd themed sub-krewes.  The Vampiric Council of New Orleans is a registered sub-krewe of Chewbacchus, and we intend to roll with the parade on January 20th, 2024.

Now, back to What We Do in the Shadows.  If you've seen this show or film at all, you know the format is that of a mockumentary with camera crew and sound techs following the vampires around documenting their daily lives.  In the show, the Vampiric Council is revealed to be comprised of many different actors who have played different vampire characters in many different types of film or movies.  This means that essentially any and all vampires from any kind of media exist in the WWDITS universe, and that opens the door for some really fun possibilities when it comes to a group of nerds in what is essentially a huge group costume parading through the French Quarter.

The show also makes a point of introducing many other kinds of supernatural creatures (werewolves, sirens, necromancers, and even lawn gnomes just to name a few). Here in NOLA we have quite a few of our own interesting supernatural creatures, and Chewbacchus itself already has krewes of werewolves and the living dead, so it only makes sense that the vampires finally get in on the action!

In keeping with the spirit of the original media, in the months leading up to the parade and during the parade the core members of the Vampiric Council will be filming our own version of a mockumentary.  Any participating member in this krewe may find themselves on camera, so consider this being forewarned!  The idea is for all vampires participating in the krewe on the night of the parade to stay in character as much as possible.  There will be a camera crew recording, but all members are welcome to record their own footage of the parade.  If the participating member wishes to have their footage used, they can sign a release and there is a chance it will make it into the mockumentary, which should be released some months after the parade.

So, that's most of the history here in a nutshell.  If you made it this far and think it would be great fun to join us in parading through the French Quarter as a vampire, then please go follow our social media accounts or email us at vampcouncilNOLA@gmail.com ,  ask questions, learn some more about Chewbacchus itself and pay your dues! (Chewbacchus as an overarching krewe required dues, but it is also likely there will be a small fee to join this particular sub-krewe in order to assist with the costs associated with filming).  Part of the fun of Chewbacchus is you never know quite who will show up, and it is definitely guaranteed to be a memorable evening made even more awesome by virtue of being caught on film!
